Robert (Bob) E. Mitchell

Robert (Bob) E. Mitchell, 93, of Stoystown (previously Hooversville) went home to the Lord December 22, 2020, at the Hospice Center, Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center, Windber, PA. He was born in Vandergrift June 1, 1927, a son of the late William Mitchell and Gladys Embleton Mitchell. He entered the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Hermitage battleship during WWII.  After being honorably discharged, he worked as a carpenter and other professions.  He finally fulfilled his dream of opening his own business as a mechanic and auto body repairman.  He enjoyed restoring autos, flying his own airplane, being a member of and serving at the Men’s Prayer Breakfast each Saturday, participating in the Somerset prison ministry.  He also enjoyed drawing, cartooning and giving presentations at the historical society and other church functions. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Wilbur, the Hooversville Historical Society, the VFW, Hooversville Senior Citizens Group and participated in the town’s many Memorial Day parades wearing his Navy uniform. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Mitchell, of 13 years, of Stoystown; daughters Sheila Padden of Hagerstown, MD; Sheri Custer (Gary) of Hagerstown, MD; son Glenn Mitchell (Barbara) of Hooversville; grandsons Robert (Bob) and Eli Mitchell; great-granddaughter Eliza Mitchell; step-son Greg McClellan (Sue) and step-daughter Bonnie Campbell; step-great granddaughter Alicia Campbell. Preceding him in death besides his parents and first wife, Dolores, of 57 years, are four brothers, a son-in-law (Thomas) and a grandson (Brian Lawson). His family thanks the Windber Hospital and Hospice staff for their care and dedication, especially during this pandemic and putting their health on the line.
